We are delighted to see SWB-Mitfahren delivering such strong results. What began in Bonn as an innovative partnership is becoming a model for cities and employers across Germany. In areas where buses and trains do not operate, or outside regular service hours, it is essential to offer people a flexible mobility option while reducing car traffic at the same time. Carpooling can make an important contribution to cutting CO₂ emissions.

When carpooling and public transport are consistently considered together

Karos transforms everyday commuting into a structured and scalable mobility system by coordinating real-world carpooling through digital technology.
Expanding the mobility mix

Carpooling as an integral part of the mobility mix

Since autumn 2022, Bonn has been the first German region to systematically integrate carpooling into public transport, with a clear fare model and tangible benefits for commuters.
Close mobility gaps

Support when public transport reaches its limits

Carpooling provides an additional option when public transport capacity is stretched or construction works and diversions disrupt daily commuting — without requiring new infrastructure.
Reducing commuter traffic

A cross-employer network, not an isolated solution

Carpooling works across regional and organisational boundaries. Increasing vehicle occupancy helps reduce pressure on both roads and rail networks.

Reducing commuter traffic without new infrastructure

The closure of Bonn’s Nordbrücke bridge on the A565 and ongoing rail works across the Rhineland are creating long-term disruption for commuters in the Bonn area. As structural damage means the bridge will not return to regular operation for several years, the pressure to provide additional mobility options remains high.

‍

Since autumn 2022, SWB Bonn has worked with Karos to connect carpooling directly with public transport. A simple fare model encourages broad adoption: passengers with a public transport subscription or Deutschlandticket travel free of charge, while offering rides remains attractive for drivers. The result is a regional, cross-employer network that works across organisational boundaries and can be activated quickly — without building new infrastructure.
