Why carpool as a passenger?
Carpooling as a passenger can make the daily commute easier, more affordable and a little more social. Instead of driving alone or relying on a connection that does not quite fit your schedule, you share a journey with someone already travelling in the same direction.
And with Karos, finding that person is part of the process.
Why carpool as a passenger?
There are plenty of reasons to leave your own car at home and take the passenger seat instead.
You can reduce your commuting costs, avoid the stress of driving yourself and still enjoy the comfort and flexibility of travelling by car.
For people living in rural or suburban areas, carpooling can also provide an option where public transport is limited, takes significantly longer or does not match working hours.
And then there is the social side: regular carpools often become familiar routines. You meet people travelling similar routes, and over time a shared commute can become a much more pleasant way to start or end the working day.
How do I find a driver?
You do not need to search manually through forums or message people individually.
Once you have added your regular journeys in the Karos app, the app suggests compatible carpoolers for your route. You can compare the proposed journey, departure time, price and other information before deciding who you would like to travel with.
You can then send a request directly through the app.

How much does it cost?
The price of a carpool depends on the journey and on the mobility programme available to you.
In some regions or through participating employers, part or all of the passenger fare may be subsidised. In other cases, passengers contribute directly towards the journey.
The important part is that cost sharing is handled automatically in the app. You can see the price before confirming your ride, and payment is managed digitally.

What if my ride is cancelled?
Daily carpools tend to be very reliable, especially once regular commuting routines have formed. But life happens: a car breaks down, someone gets sick or plans change unexpectedly.
In a dense carpooling network, there is often a good chance of finding another suitable ride.
And in some regions and company programmes, passengers have an additional backup: Return Assistance.
If an eligible return carpool is cancelled by the driver on the same day, a taxi can take you back instead.
You can check whether Return Assistance is available to you here:
Am I insured as a passenger?
Yes. Carpooling to work is still considered a regular commute, just like travelling to work in your own car, so the same basic insurance framework applies.
The vehicle owner must have the legally required motor insurance, which also covers passengers in the event of an accident.
If you have questions about a specific situation or policy, it is always worth checking the exact conditions with your insurer.
What makes being a passenger different?
The biggest advantage is simple: you get the benefits of travelling by car without having to drive yourself.
You can reduce the cost of your commute, use travel time differently and avoid bringing a second car onto the road.
And because the same commuting routes happen again and again, carpooling can become less about arranging a new journey every day and more about building a reliable routine with people travelling your way.
So if you have been wondering whether the passenger seat might work for your commute: give it a try.
