When parking is scarce and only one road leads to the destination

Carpooling reduces parking pressure at a site with only one access road, easing the burden for employees and patient traffic alike.

Carpooling as effective corporate benefit in shift work

University Hospital Bonn (UKB) is located on Venusberg and can only be reached via a single road that regularly becomes congested. Parking is scarce, employees spend a long time searching for available spaces, and patients sometimes have to cancel appointments because they cannot find parking.

‍

As one of the region’s largest employers, UKB has been involved from the very beginning: since September 2022, Karos has offered carpooling to around 8,300 employees. With a registered public transport ticket, rides are completely free. The parking reform in summer 2025 further increased the pressure to act. At the same time, the recurring rail renovations on the Cologne–Bonn main route are placing additional strain on commuters. Karos is already an established response to these challenges, with measurable impact: 2,500 completed trips, 66,000 avoided kilometres, and 8,5 tonnes of CO₂e emissions saved each year.
